Sealants are a liquid plastic coating, which Dr. Fung will paint on the chewing surfaces of your child’s molars. Once it dries and hardens, it forms a protective barrier to keep bacteria out of the deep grooves and crevices. Dr. Fung recommends placing sealants as soon as your child’s permanent molars come in, though in some cases she may recommend sealants on the baby teeth, as well.
Fluoride is a vital mineral that helps to strengthen developing tooth enamel. Although most city water supplies are already enhanced with fluoride, it may not be enough to fully protect children’s teeth. To provide a fluoride treatment, Dr. Fung will coat teeth in a fluoride gel, varnish, or rinse. It takes just minutes, but can help to combat cavities for years.
Many dentists wait until all of a child’s permanent teeth have come in before beginning orthodontic care. But delaying treatment may only increase the severity of misalignment and prolong orthodontic treatment time. Perhaps more importantly, it can contribute to poor oral habits, obstructed breathing, and sleep disorders.
As part of her commitment to oral-systemic health, Dr. Fung begins orthodontic evaluations at a young age. The ideal time to intervene is actually before children begin school. That’s why we offer myofunctional therapy as young as age 3. Removable appliances help to expand the palate and align the teeth.
